Lawrence HeppeLl piano tuning

The longest established piano tuning business in the North East

About Lawrence Heppell Piano Tuning

The name of Heppell has been synonymous with the North East piano industry since 1911, with three generations tuning and repairing the pianos of north east residents.

In the early part of last century, Jack Heppell became an apprentice to Alderson & Brentnall, situated near Haymarket in Newcastle upon Tyne, before going on to manage some of the biggest and best Piano companies in the North East.

In 1929, he founded his own business, which was taken over by his son John Clifford Heppell towards the end of 1945. In 1982, Cliff’s son Lawrence became the latest member of the Heppell family to follow in his elder’s footsteps, and he has maintained the integrity and quality of workmanship to this day.

Impressive C.V.

Lawrence has, if anything expanded the area covered by his forefathers, regularly taking working trips to North of the Border in Berwick, Dunbar, Lauder and Selkirk, whilst travelling West to Alston and Nenthead, and South to Thirsk and Richmond, although the bulk of his work is centred around Northumberland, Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland including work for the Theatre Royal, The Empire in Sunderland, and the City Hall, a venue Lawrence tuned for the World Famous legend Neil Sedaka on his last three appearances at the iconic concert hall.

The latest incarnation of Heppell piano tuners can also present a C.V. that shows work for the Royal Shakespeare Company, both at the Royal and the former Playhouse, now known as Norther Stage, The English National Ballet and Ballet Rambert during their 90’s tours.

Some recent jobs

A few words for new customers…

My aim is to respond to customer requests and queries as soon as possible, within the same day if possible and book the tuning or assessment for a time withing two weeks at a maximum, although this is often within one week.

On arrival as a first-time viewing, I’d give the piano a check over for mechanical faults, it’s ability to take a tuning and if concert pitch is a reasonable or impossible goal. Then discuss the findings with the customer and work out what is best for the piano, and the customer. If a piano is not worth spending money on, I will be transparent with the assessment.

On completion I would have a chat about the future tuning schedule, be it the average six monthly, or yearly for follow up tunings, always checking the mechanics alongside the tuning.

I am always available to talk about the piano and the job done, always happy to give advice when needed.
